Hermannsburg can be approached either on the R74 from Stanger or Greytown, or on the R33 from Pietermaritzburg or Dundee. For those approaching from Pietermaritzburg, the P160 short–cut allows one to avoid the extra distance entailed by going through Greytown. Look out for the turn–off when you see the huge grain silos to the East of the R33. The P160 is a fairly good tar road, joining the R74 from Greytown at Welgegund petrol station, where you turn right towards Ahrens and Kranskop. The Hermannsburg turn to the right is clearly signposted – turn right onto the P305 at the crossroads by the piggery and then left onto the D469, which ends at the school.
